Ending Political Travel Perks at Our Expense

While families in Esquimalt–Saanich–Sooke are struggling with rising costs and economic insecurity, MPs and their spouses continue to enjoy taxpayer-funded privileges. The practice of flying across the country on public funds is an example of the political elite living comfortably at our expense.

Unjustified Travel Claims: A System in Need of Reform

In 2019-2020, Liberal MP Hedy Fry claimed over $25,000 in travel expenses, with her spouse tagging along on more than 20 flights. Conservative MP Ed Fast racked up $22,000, including family flights, while promoting fiscal restraint. This system of unlimited “dependent travel” points allows MPs to misuse taxpayer dollars with little oversight, all under a vague "reunification" excuse.

The Struggle in Our Region

As MPs enjoy these perks, residents of Esquimalt–Saanich–Sooke are facing real challenges:

•Saanich rents are hitting $2,000/month, putting pressure on families.

•Tourism workers in Sooke can’t afford to live where they work.

•Esquimalt families are cutting corners just to make ends meet.

This isn’t just unfair — it’s an outrageous misuse of public funds when so many are struggling.

A Plan for Change: Ending the Gravy Train

It’s time to end these excessive and unjust benefits for MPs. I’m committed to reforming the system, ensuring that Ottawa serves the people, not the political elite.

•Cancel Spousal Flights: MPs' families will no longer be able to travel on the taxpayer’s dime. Spouses will pay for their own travel.

•Cap MP Travel: MPs will have a $5,000 annual cap on travel expenses — enough for essential work, not luxury vacations.

•Redirect Savings: The estimated $5-10 million saved annually will be reinvested into social programs benefiting all citizens.

Putting Esquimalt–Saanich–Sooke First

No more free rides for the political elite. If MPs want to travel, they can pay their own way. It’s time to end the gravy train and focus on real change. Our region deserves leadership that puts people first — not perks.
